A MOTORCYCLIST was arrested after a pedestrian was killed on Blackpool Promenade.
Derek Atherton, 58, was walking his dog when he was in collision with a Yamaha motorbike as he attempted to cross the Prom near St Chad's headland.

He died after suffering head and body injuries.

The 24-year-old rider of the motorcycle was also injured and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

He was later arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was questioned and released on bail pending further inquiries.

Sgt Peter Beresford, of Blackpool's road policing unit, said: "Members of the public have been most helpful in supplying their eyewitness accounts.

"If anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the bike prior to the collision has not come forward and spoken to us I would urge them to do so now."

The incident happened at 8pm on Friday as thousands of visitors and vehicles poured on to the Golden Mile to see the Illuminations.

Hoteliers and passers by rushed to help Mr Atherton, who is believed to live in the South Shore area of Blackpool.

Anyone with information is asked to call Blackpool Police on (01253) 293933 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
