Pool star brands FA a 'joke'

BLACKPOOL midfielder Southern today let out a little pent up frustration as he branded the FA "a joke".
A man who prides himself on playing as many games as possible, Southern's season was severely disrupted when he was shown a red card and banned for three games.

The midfielder saw red for the first time in his career at Macclesfield in the Carling Cup - when he was dismissed for 'intent' after leaning his head towards an opponent.

Southern freely admits he was in the wrong and has apologised to manager Simon Grayson and his team-mates.

But what winds him up is that his suspension for violent conduct was exactly the same as Newcastle's Danny Guthrie received for breaking the leg of Hull's Craig Fagan with a deliberate and reckless tackle.

"It is unbelievable really when you think about it and I have been saying this to my family for the last few weeks," said the 27-year-old.
"The FA is just an absolute joke.

"How they can give me a three game ban for hardly touching a player, for intent, and he (Guthrie) breaks a fellow professional's leg and he gets the same ban as me?

"It's shows just what you're up against really.

"I've learnt my lesson and learned form my mistakes and it won't be happening again.

"It was disappointing at the time but I kept myself fit and now I'm back in the team and things are going along quite nicely.

"We are undefeated in the last four so there are a lot of positives to take into the games coming up after the international break so we are going along all right."

What Southern was most disappointed about was picking up a first red card of a career that has seen him make 211 appearances in a Tangerine shirt - the Seasiders second longest serving player behind Danny Coid.

One red card in all that time, especially for a hard-tackling central midfielder, isn't a bad record.

"No it's not," added Southern. "And that was the disappointing thing because I've made tackles over the past 10 years where they have been slightly late and I've not been given bookings or red cards.

"I'm not hiding from the fact that I'm responsible for my actions and that it was out of character and out of order.

"I apologised to the lads and the gaffer. It wasn't like me.

"But when you see other things that go unpunished week in, week out in the Premier League and the divisions below it is unbelievable.

"But you can only do what you can do for yourself. I got punished and I took it on the chin.

"I am back in the team now and it is all forgotten about."

Do you agree with Keith, is the FA's system fair? Leave your comments below.

We know you're not that type of player Keith, but you may want to rise above it and carry on doing on the pitch what you do best.

Tell you what I'll say it for you as I can not face the wrath of the FA, so if this helps you to realise that we know your frustration: It's tough having to put up with numpty refs every week, the ones that give everything against you, have no commonsense, the Mr Fussy's of this world. Just remember decisions will go the other way sometimes and you will have to take that as scant consolation.

Let this experience make you a stronger, better more determined footballer. We're all behind you mate.

Whilst I agree with Keith,s comments to some degree the difference I see is that had Keith not brought it up his sending off had already been forgotten. On the other hand Danny Guthrie,s will be mentioned every time a simmilar incident occurs and he will have to live with that for a considerable time to come.I am not a fan of the F A and sometimes further action should be administered and this is one of those cases, however they are only following the rules that are in place at the time these offences took place.Forget it Keith and get on with the job of moving the Pool forward and up the table.

Having followed/played/refereed and run teams for over 60 years I can sympathise with Keith, and indeed all todays players.
FIFA and EUFA (or whatever they're called these days) are a complete joke. I'm sure a large percentage of them have never been involved in the game except on committees. The way they are ruining our game is unbelievable, especially the way they interefere with 'The Laws of the Game', particularly in my view the Off-Side Law.
If a player is Off-side and is 'interfering with play' i.e. in a position where he could influence play within that sequence of play, then he is Off-side. Not the way they are interpreting it now, which by the way, nobody seems to understand.
I always go back to what Brian Clough said, which is "If he's not interfering with play he shouldn't be on the bloody pitch".

Calling the FA a 'joke' is disrespectful to all comedy writers, everywhere.
Rather, the FA are a bunch of self-indulgent freeloading, elitist marxist bully boys intent on squeezing every last penny out of the media and the public at the expense of the fans of the game.
Personally, I don't find it funny, given they are a group of individuals given the responsibility of being the custodians of the game.

Davepick you've got me started now on one of my heroes Brian Clough.

"I wouldn't say I was the best manager there was, but I would say I'm in the top 1"

Legend!

Of course Southern is right and its decent of him to criticise a Newcastle player, given his strong allegience to the Mags. I never went to Macclesfield but there is a clear breach of natural justice given the punishments. Surely the punishment should be designed to fit the offence?

We look much more fluid with Keith back in the middle of the park
